One of the most precise and recurring time periods in prophetic Scripture is 42 months — which also appears as 3½ years, 1,260 days, and "a time, times, and half a time." These are all expressions of the same period, and understanding why this specific duration appears so frequently is key to unlocking the timeline of biblical prophecy.
The Appearances
- Daniel 7:25 — The "little horn" (antichrist figure) will oppress the saints for "a time, times, and half a time" (3½ years)
- Daniel 12:7 — The same duration for the shattering of the power of the holy people
- Revelation 11:2 — The Gentiles will trample the holy city for 42 months
- Revelation 11:3 — The two witnesses will prophesy for 1,260 days
- Revelation 12:6 — The woman (Israel/Church) will be nourished in the wilderness for 1,260 days
- Revelation 12:14 — The woman is protected for "a time, times, and half a time"
- Revelation 13:5 — The beast is given authority for 42 months
Why 42?
The number 42 is 6 × 7 — the number of man (6) multiplied by the number of completion (7). It represents the complete duration of human opposition to God's purposes. Man's rebellion is not infinite — it has a fixed, measured, numbered end.
Forty-two is also connected to Israel's 42 stations in the wilderness (Numbers 33). The journey from Egypt to the Promised Land took 42 encampments — a complete journey of testing before arrival. The tribulation period of 42 months follows the same pattern: a complete season of trial that terminates in deliverance.
Half of Seven
Three and a half is half of seven — a broken seven, an incomplete cycle. It represents a period that is permitted but not ultimate. It is judgment interrupted by mercy. The beast rules for half of seven — because God will not allow the full seven to belong to the enemy. The other half belongs to the King.
The Promise Within the Number
Every mention of 42 months carries an implicit promise: this will end. It is numbered. It is measured. It is bounded by God's sovereignty. No tribulation lasts forever. The number itself is the comfort.
